Deal structure FAQ

Is work-for-hire always bad?
No—if the fee fully prices the rights and opportunity cost. It is bad when the fee is a demo rate but the contract takes life-of-copyright ownership.
What is a producer point?
Typically a percentage of recording royalties; definitions vary—read the base.
Should I take a smaller fee for more points?
Only if you believe in the release and accounting. Model conservative sales.
Can I keep publishing on a work-for-hire master?
Sometimes master rights and composition rights are split differently—negotiate explicitly.
What if they never release the song?
Try for kill fees, reversion, or the right to reuse your beat after a dormancy period.
Do beat-store exclusives equal work-for-hire?
Not automatically. Many exclusives are licenses, not copyright assignments—read the PDF.
Is an advance taxable when received?
Often yes as income when received—ask your tax pro; do not assume it is a non-taxable loan.
Is this legal advice?
No. Educational content as of July 2026.
